Private First Class Sam Morgan was born on August 12, 1923, in New Mexico.1 Morgan enlisted on August 12, 1923, and served as a Navajo Code Talker during World War II in the Pacific Theater.2 The Code Talkers were tasked with transmitting encoded messages during the Pacific War.3 Morgan was part of the 4th Marine Division, and along with the rest of his division, was assigned to land in the first assault wave on Iwo Jima.2,4 Morgan was killed in action during the second day of the assault on February 20, 1945.2 He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and the Congressional Silver Metal.1, 4
