Preserving Veterans Stories

One mission of the Veterans Legacy Grant Program is to commemorate the lives and legacies of New Mexico veterans memorialized at New Mexico’s National Cemeteries, beginning with the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The content produced will focus on Veterans’ service and sacrifice to the country while in uniform, and, to the extent possible, include information about Veterans’ civic engagement and other caring acts before and after their time in the military. The final product will include stories of dedicated people, all enshrined Veterans, who led lives of commitment that can inspire us all.

To extend that memorialization, the VLGP will leverage both technical strategies and relationships to optimize the sharing of Veterans’ legacies for communities locally and across the state. The Program’s use of technology will provide access for Americans anywhere in the U.S., as well as abroad, to learn about the service of New Mexicans interred in New Mexico’s National Cemeteries. That memorialization extends in fact to people of all nations via the internet.  VLGP students and faculty will also incorporate primary sources –original documents – including government records, newspaper articles, photographs, and contributions from family members and loved ones such as personal memories, interviews, and biographies
