PFC Ramon H. Chavira

Death: 20 February 1977
PFC Ramon Hernández Chavira was born 17 February 1922 in Gila, New Mexico. His parents were Frank V. Chavira and Perfeta Hernández. He registered for the draft for service in World War II. At the time, he worked at Civilian Conservation Corps Camp F-52-N in Glenwood, New Mexico. PFC Chavira entered into the U.S. Army at Ft. Bliss, Texas on 15 October 1942.
He arrived at Bombay, India on 4 March 1943 for service in India and Burma as a Demolition Specialist, where he served in Company D of the 330th Engineer Regiment. This unit’s endeavors included construction on the India to Burma Road (the Stilwell Road), as well as fuel pipelines from India to China. There, he earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged at Ft. Bliss on 2 November 1945.
After his discharge PFC Chavira returned to Bayard, New Mexico, where he met and married Angela Prieto Jauriqui of Santa Rita. He worked as a mill operator for copper mining. PFC Chavira died at Ft. Bliss Hospital on 20 February 1977. He is buried at FBNC, Section A, Row R, Site 37. His wife Angela is buried there as well.
