PVT Charles O. Grear was born in 1880, likely in Georgia. He enlisted in the United States Army while living in Macon, Georgia, and was assigned to Company H of the 24th United States Infantry, a unit whose enlisted men are commonly referred to as Buffalo Soldiers. His profession was listed as lineman, which during this period would have referred to work in maintaining telegraph lines. His deployments include service at Ft. Jossman on Guimaras Island in the Philippines. He was ultimately discharged from E Company of the 9th Cavalry on 27 November 1912.

He at Ft. Bayard Hospital on 6 March 1914 and is interred at Section B, Row G, Site 33 of Ft. Bayard National Cemetery.
