Edith Ernestine Barwick (Haag) enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) on May 11, 1944, and trained at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia. 1 After training, she served in New Mexico to work for the Manhattan Project. 2 She was honorably discharged in October 1946. 2

Barwick was born in Pelham, Georgia, to Mary Leona Brock and Thomas Earl Barwick.  2, 3 She graduated from Pelham High School in 1941 and attended Freeman Business College from September 1941 to December 1942. 2 From January 1942 to May 1944, she worked at the Naval Ordnance Plant in Macon, Georgia, making depth charges. 2 In 1947, she married William Edwin Haag who was also stationed at Los Alamos. 2 After the war, she worked for the Atomic Energy Commission (later the Energy Research and Development Administration and the Department of Energy. She was a contract specialist at DOE for a major part of her career. After 36 years, she retired in January 1981. 2

A bowler for over 40 years, she was a member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress Pioneer Club and a state representative for New Mexico to the national tournaments for several years. 2 In 1997, she was inducted into the New Mexico Women Bowling Association’s Hall of Fame.
