Eleanor Wanda Sanders was born September 3, 1921, in Dickson City, Pennsylvania to Albert and Helen Slivinski Wassel. 1 She graduated from Fell Township High School in 1939. 1 After graduating from Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, Maryland, Wassel Sanders served as a second lieutenant with the Army Nurse Corps from 1944 through 1946 during World War II. 1, 2

Sanders had a 42-year nursing career. 1 She practiced nursing in the Panama Canal Zone from 1947 to 1950 and later retired in 1987 from San Diego County, California as a Psychiatric Nurse. 1 After retirement, she spent many years doing volunteer work with the San Diego Senior Citizens. 3 She lived in San Diego for 50 years before moving to La Puebla, New Mexico in 2003. 3
