LCpl Chavez was born in Albuquerque New Mexico the son of Leonela Maldonado.    He was a member of elite Force Recon Marines trained to operate behind enemy lines using unconventional warfare tactics. LCpl Chavez died near Quang Tri province as a result of fragmentation wounds when the vehicle he was in detonated on a hostile mine.1 Prior to Vietnam Chavez, he was a Plumber’s aid at the University of New Mexico and was a member of the Marine Reserve.2
