Gilberto was born in Santa Fe to Carmelita Jacquez Ulibarri and Eulogio F. Ulibarri the youngest of twelve children. He spent his youth in Gallina, New Mexico herding sheep and helping his grandparents run their ranch and general store.
After graduating from St. Michael’s High School, he took it upon himself to volunteer for the select service draft system in the United States Army in June 1958. He received his basic training in Fort Carson, Colorado with an additional eight-week advanced Infantry training. Gilberto was permanently assigned to Fort Myer, Arlington, Virginia to Company D 1st Battalion 3rd Infantry. He was selected to serve in the Presidential Honor Guard Battle Group which required servicemen to be constantly at the ready to provide round-the clock guard at the White House, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and various other ceremonies and locations.
