Hermione Peterson (Lynch) enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) on December 11, 1942, and was sent to Fort Des Moines for training. 1, 2, 3, 4 She played the cornet and French horn in the WAAC band as well as the Salvation Army band. 5

Peterson was born in Evanston, Illinois to Gustave “Gus” and Genevieve “Gene” Petersen. 6 Her parents were lifelong Salvation Army officers and she traveled with them to assignments in the western U. S. and Hawaii working in soup kitchens during the Depression. 5

In 1947 she married in Inglewood, California, and raised two children, and later relocated to New Mexico in 1979 after retiring from civil service. 5, 7
