Irene Huerena (Gallegos) enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) on October 27, 1943. 1 She completed basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and her military occupational specialty was a medical technician at the 17th WAC Hospital. 2 She was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. 1 Huerena Gallegos received an honorable discharge on February 15, 1946. 1
Huerena Gallegos was born in Soham, New Mexico. Before she enlisted in the military, she worked at a state hospital in New Mexico. 3
