Jean M. Lennon (Carty) joined the WAC (Women’s Army Corp) on July 18, 1944. 1, 2 In January of 1945, she was training at an air base in New Hampshire. 3 In July of 1945, she and her fighter pilot fiancée, Charles Carty, were married in Yale, Michigan. 1, 4, 5 Lennon returned to an Air Force base in Manchester, New Hampshire, recording the weather via teletype until the war’s end. 1 She is featured in the Women’s War Memorial in Washington, D.C. 1

Lennon was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 10, 1922, to Henrietta and Harvey Lennon. 1, 6, 7 The family moved to the thumb area of Michigan where Lennon graduated from Yale High School in 1940 as an honor roll student. 1, 8, 9, 10 Following the war, she and her husband returned home to Detroit Michigan. 1 Lennon was active in church and school activities and worked at a local hospital where she oversaw a teaching clinic. 1 Her obituary states she was a prolific writer, penning as many as 300 letters in a year. 1 Lennon lived by her mantra, “Friends are like flowers in the garden of life.” 1
