PFC Juan Gutierrez was born in Trujillo New Mexico son of Leo and Celerina Pacheco. He graduated from Alamogordo high School and enlisted in the US Army in 1966. He arrived in Viet Nam June 8, 1967. In the early morning of July 14, 1967, Quan Loi received enemy mortar fire. The first round hit outside of a hooch where soldiers were sleeping. The next one came through the roof and reportedly injured every person inside with metal fragments.1 Most were able to scramble out to a nearby bunker. Two soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division were killed in the attack on the base, PFC Juan F. Gutierrez and PFC Larry R. Foster. Pvt Berek from 23rd Artillery also died during the barrage.2
