Manuel Ortez enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July 1944 as a Tech Sergeant. Mr. Ortiz had served San Miguel County and New Mexico in many distinctive capacities during his lifetime.  He was formerly employed by the New Mexico Department of Public Welfare, a former business manager of the New Mexico State Hospital, served San Miguel County as Sheriff, a former member of the San Miguel County Board of Commissioners, a former San Miguel County Democratic Chairman, and a former San Miguel County Treasurer for four years.  He worked for the New Mexico State Land Office from 1957 to June 30, 1971.  He then became Director of the New Mexico State Forestry Department from July 1, 1971, until May 31, 1976, at which time he retired from active work
