Margaret Lucille Hughes (Anderson) served as an Army nurse from June 29, 1917, through March 29, 1919. [i] She was deployed to England on July 31, 1919, on the U.S.S. Walmer Castle, [ii] and returned from Brest, France on March 19, 1919, on the U.S.S. Great Northern.[iii]

Hughes was born October 6, 1900, in Des Moines to Tandy and Jennie Hughes.[iv] At the age of 19, she married Clee Anderson in Polk Iowa.[v] Clee Anderson was also a veteran of the First World War and is buried next to his wife in the Santa Fe National Cemetery.[vi] The couple lived in Des Moines until 1961 when they moved to Albuquerque.[vii] Their son William Clee Anderson was born in Des Moines in 1930.[viii] Margaret Anderson died May 21, 1977, in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she had lived for 16 years.[ix]
