Mary Al Adams (Summers) joined the U.S. Navy as an ensign in May of 1944, serving as a nurse. 1, 2 She was first stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas, and later cared for soldiers wounded in the Pacific Theater. 2
Adams was born at Cedar Hill, North Llano River, Texas to Ella Hollmig and David Quince Adams. 2 She graduated from Sonora High School and received her nursing degree after studying at M&S Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. 1, 2 Later she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of New Mexico and her master’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University Malibu, California. 2
Adams married C. Kelly Summers on May 1, 1945. 1, 3 Following her discharge from the military, Adams worked in hospitals as a floor and emergency room nurse in Seattle, Santa Fe, Buffalo, and Amarillo. 2 She worked as a nurse at Bataan Memorial Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Adams also worked as a school nurse in Belen and Albuquerque New Mexico, as well as in Torrance, California. 2 She was an accomplished painter and woodcarver and a member of the Albuquerque Woodworkers Association. 2
